Just getting key for your BTO, resale HDB, condo or premises in Singapore? Planning for home renovation and looking for interior designer?
If you are like most couples starting a new life together, you will find yourself stretched thin trying to organise a wedding, juggling finances and setting up your new love nest at the same time. All on top of holding down a full-time job. Well, we have made the process a little easier for you by interviewing a homeowner who has recently been there and done that, and distilled some practical pointers for you before you embark on your renovation journey.
1. Renovation Requires Specialized Knowledge
How many of us think of home redecoration as a piece of cake? After all, who would know our needs better than ourselves? Truth is, renovation actually involves a lot of specialized knowledge about space management, materials, design, quality, and value comparison, which an experienced ID is trained to handle, which brings us to the next point.
2. Finding the Right Interior Designer
Finding the right ID is not unlike finding your Mr. or Ms. Right. Much of it is a matter of chemistry, trust, and communication. If the chemistry is not right, such as if the other party is imposing his or her design ideas on you instead of listening to your needs, perhaps it is not meant to be. In short, learn to trust your instincts.

3. Difficulty in Comparing Quotations
Apple to apple? More like apple to durian. The reality is contractors will interpret your brief in different ways, and offer different suggestions based on their expertise and source of supply. For instance, tiles alone come in a mind-boggling array of designs, materials and quality. How do you decide? Then there are the intangibles such as carpentry craftsmanship. How do you gauge the quality of wood used? How do you compare workmanship?
4. Look at Past Projects
The work speaks for itself. Always ask to see the portfolio of completed works of your shortlisted IDs or contractors to get the best gauge of execution and delivery. Chances are, what you see will be what you get.

5. The Devil in the Details
Looking at stylish photos in a portfolio is not enough to give you the best gauge of quality, especially for finer details such as carpentry. So if you get invited to a housewarming party and love the execution of the décor of your pal’s new roost, don’t be shy about asking for a recommendation!
6. Be Prepared to Coordinate
Depending on the scale of your project, you could be working with 10 or more sub-contractors dealing with anything from air-con to electrical and plumbing to masonry and carpentry to painting and wallpaper contractors… a helluva lot of coordination is needed. The order of work is also vital. Which just makes it another compelling reason to hire an ID that you can trust to oversee and coordinate.

7. Nothing is perfect – do not expect it!
Just like a soulmate, your dream home may fall a little short in some ways. Perhaps that kitchen cum bar counter is a no-go because of a structural pillar or an awkward room layout. Or you had to pick laminates over solid wooden flooring because it would have busted your budget. Not unlike a marriage, it is important to compromise, keep that big picture in mind and be thankful for the rest that turned out perfect.
